Air India flight AI130 from London Heathrow to Mumbai descended into chaos on Monday after at least seven people, five passengers and two crew members, fell ill mid-air, reportedly due to suspected food poisoning. Earlier reports suggested as many as 11 individuals were affected. Symptoms included nausea and dizziness during various phases of the nine-hour journey.
The Boeing 777-300ER registered VT-AEN landed safely in Mumbai, where medical teams were on standby. Two passengers and two crew members were taken for further medical evaluation before being released. Air India stated the regulator has been informed, and an investigation is underway.
Cabin pressurisation issues were ruled out, and experts now believe tainted food is the likely cause. Notably, the pilots remained unaffected, likely due to aviation protocols that ensure cockpit meals are prepared separately.
This incident follows closely on the heels of a tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, which claimed 241 lives and is still under investigation.
