Air India has unveiled the custom-styled cabin interiors of its first line-fit, made-for-Air India Boeing 787-9, marking a major milestone in the airline’s Vihaan.AI transformation programme. Registered VT-AWA, the aircraft was delivered on 11 January 2026 from Boeing’s Everett factory and will enter commercial service on 1 February 2026 on the Mumbai–Frankfurt route.

Designed exclusively for Air India and installed directly on Boeing’s production line, the new interiors set a design and product standard that will be rolled out across the airline’s entire 787 fleet. In addition to 19 further new 787s, all 26 existing 787-8s will be retrofitted with the same cabins and in-flight entertainment systems by mid-2027.

The 296-seat, three-class configuration comprises 30 Business Class suites in a 1-2-1 layout, 28 Premium Economy seats in a dedicated cabin, and 238 Economy seats. Business Class features customised Elevate Ascent suites with sliding privacy doors, fully flat 79-inch beds, 4K QLED touchscreens, Bluetooth headphone pairing, wireless charging, and ample personal storage. Premium Economy and Economy cabins are equipped with RECARO PL3530 and CL3710 seats respectively, offering enhanced ergonomics, generous recline, personal 4K screens, and USB-A and USB-C fast charging throughout.

Across all cabins, Air India introduces Bluetooth audio pairing, while Business Class adds wireless charging pads. The aircraft also debuts a new onboard mood-lighting system developed with Tata Elxsi, inspired by ancient Indian wellness traditions and chakra concepts, with 10 custom lighting scenes designed to support circadian rhythms and passenger wellbeing on long-haul flights.

Styled in collaboration with JPA Design, the interiors reflect Air India’s revitalised brand identity through a warm palette, tactile materials, refined detailing, and intuitive usability. Together with RECARO’s seating solutions and Thales’ AVANT Up inflight entertainment system, the new cabin represents a significant step toward delivering a world-class, distinctly Indian long-haul experience.
