Air India has converted 15 Airbus A321neo orders to the long-range A321XLR, strengthening its future fleet with aircraft capable of flying up to 4,700 nautical miles. The move, announced at Wings India 2026, will allow the airline to open new nonstop international routes and optimise high-demand medium-haul services using single-aisle economics.
The converted aircraft form part of Air India’s 600-aircraft mega order with Airbus, with deliveries of the A321XLRs scheduled for 2029–2030. Air India said the decision supports its long-term transformation strategy by combining greater range, fuel efficiency, and lower emissions with improved passenger comfort.
Airbus described the A321XLR as a “game-changing” aircraft that enables airlines to boost frequencies, manage seasonality, and deploy capacity more flexibly. The order conversion reinforces the deepening strategic partnership between Air India and Airbus as the airline builds one of the world’s youngest and most efficient fleets.
