A Virginia family of four has filed a lawsuit against Delta Air Lines and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, alleging they were bitten by bedbugs during a transatlantic flight, causing physical injuries and emotional distress.
According to the complaint, Romulo Albuquerque, his wife Lisandra Garcia, and their two children say they were swarmed by bedbugs aboard a KLM-operated flight from Atlanta to Amsterdam in March. The family claims the bites resulted in raised, itchy welts, lesions, and rashes across their torsos and extremities, with photographic evidence included in the court filing.
The lawsuit states that approximately two hours into the flight, Garcia felt insects crawling on her and discovered bugs on her clothing and around the seats. The family says flight attendants were notified but allegedly asked them to remain quiet to avoid causing panic. Photos and videos taken by the family purportedly show insects in the seat creases and dead bugs on a napkin.
The family argues that the incident ruined their vacation to Serbia, led to medical expenses, and caused embarrassment, anxiety, and the loss of personal items and clothing. They are seeking at least $200,000 in compensatory damages.
Delta said the allegations relate to flights not operated by Delta and that it will respond through legal channels. KLM declined to comment on the specifics, citing ongoing litigation.
