KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has suspended multiple routes to the Middle East and adjusted its flight operations as a precautionary measure amid growing geopolitical instability across the region.

In an official statement, KLM confirmed that it is currently avoiding the airspace of Iran, Iraq and Israel, as well as portions of airspace over several countries in the Gulf region. As a result, flights to Dubai, Riyadh, Dammam and Tel Aviv have been suspended until further notice.

“Due to the geopolitical situation, KLM is currently avoiding the airspace of Iran, Iraq and Israel as a precaution, as well as the airspace over several countries in the Gulf region,” the airline stated. “This means that we will not be operating flights to Dubai, Riyadh, Dammam and Tel Aviv for the time being.”

KLM has not disclosed specific details regarding the security risks behind the move, but emphasized that route decisions are based on continuous safety assessments. According to a company spokesperson, the airline evaluates the situation on a daily basis and coordinates closely with Dutch authorities and international aviation safety organizations.

The decision comes amid renewed instability in the Middle East, including ongoing unrest in Iran and increasing military activity in the region. Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump announced that a naval task force — including the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and guided missile destroyers — is being deployed toward the region as a deterrence measure, further highlighting the volatile security environment.

Following KLM’s announcement, several major international carriers have taken similar steps. Air France, British Airways, Lufthansa and other European airlines have reportedly cancelled or reduced services to destinations including Israel, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, citing the deteriorating security situation.

While some airlines are suspending entire routes, others have opted to reroute aircraft to avoid sensitive airspace, resulting in longer flight paths and higher fuel consumption.

Despite the growing number of suspensions, Middle Eastern airspace has not been officially closed by regional authorities. Airlines based in the Gulf region, including Emirates, continue to operate scheduled services, although industry sources suggest additional internal risk assessments and contingency measures are being applied.

The number of passengers affected by the suspensions has not yet been disclosed. KLM stated that travelers stranded at destinations such as Dubai are permitted to rebook with alternative airlines that are still operating, although the carrier will not automatically arrange transfers to competing carriers.

For flights to Asia, KLM indicated that the operational impact remains limited. The airline had already been avoiding Iranian and Iraqi airspace in recent months, meaning the current rerouting strategy does not significantly increase flight times or fuel burn.
