KLM has agreed to sell a 75% stake in its in-flight catering subsidiary, KLM Catering Services, to gategroup, marking a strategic shift as the Dutch carrier looks to streamline operations while maintaining control over onboard service quality.
Under the proposed deal, KLM will retain a 25% minority stake, ensuring continued involvement in catering decisions for its flights. The transaction forms part of the airline’s broader “Back on Track” restructuring programme aimed at improving efficiency and long-term competitiveness.
KLM Chief Financial Officer Bas Brouns said the partnership would allow the airline to leverage gategroup’s global expertise while safeguarding service standards. He added that the deal would not lead to job losses at KLM Catering Services.
Gategroup, which operates in more than 60 countries, said the agreement would strengthen its European footprint. Its regional president, Herman Anbeek, said the companies plan to invest in a new catering facility at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, featuring advanced technology and high environmental standards.
KLM Catering Services, which employs more than 1,300 people, produces around 55,000 meals daily for approximately 350 flights, including intercontinental, European and cargo services.
The proposed acquisition remains subject to consultation with employee representatives and regulatory approval.
