KLM reports stronger first-half results but warns more work is needed

Share

KLM Group posted improved financial results for the first half of 2026, with revenue rising 8% year-on-year to €6.9 billion and its operating result improving by €92 million to €68 million. Despite the stronger performance, the airline says the results remain insufficient to secure its long-term financial future.

According to CEO Marjan Rintel, cost-saving measures and productivity improvements are delivering results, but KLM must continue strengthening its financial position amid geopolitical uncertainty, rising operating costs, volatile fuel prices and intense competition. She also highlighted the upcoming arrival of KLM’s first Airbus A350 as a major milestone in the airline’s fleet renewal programme.

The improved performance was supported by strong demand for both passenger and cargo services, with higher revenue per seat, particularly on routes to Asia and North and Central America. KLM’s Back on Track transformation programme generated €315 million in savings, outperforming its targets during the first six months of the year.

Chief Financial Officer Bas Brouns said the airline is making progress but stressed that further action is needed to build long-term financial resilience. KLM will continue to focus on productivity gains, strict cost control and targeted investments to strengthen its competitive position.

Among KLM’s business units, Cargo benefited from robust demand, especially from Asia, while Engineering & Maintenance improved through increased third-party work and operational efficiencies. Transavia, however, continued to face margin pressure in the highly competitive leisure travel market.

Looking ahead, KLM expects the second half of 2026 to remain challenging due to ongoing geopolitical tensions, particularly in the Middle East, and their potential impact on fuel prices, airspace availability and global trade. The airline says it will maintain its focus on operational reliability, productivity improvements and preserving a strong financial position.
