KLM posts stable 2025 results but signals need for structural reform

Share

KLM reported a 2025 operating profit of €416 million on revenues of €13.2 billion, up 3.9% year-on-year. The result reflects progress under its “Back on Track” improvement program, which exceeded its €450 million performance target through higher revenues, lower costs and improved productivity.

Despite the stabilisation, profitability remains modest, with a 3.2% operating margin. Management stressed that further structural measures are required to safeguard long-term financial resilience amid rising cost pressures in the Netherlands and broader industry headwinds.

Q4 and Operational Context

Fourth-quarter profit reached €78 million, up from €51 million a year earlier, supported by improved operational reliability. However, 2025 was marked by significant disruption:

  • Technical fleet issues causing maintenance delays and cancellations
  • Supply chain shortages affecting punctuality
  • Continued closure of Russian airspace and other geopolitical constraints leading to longer routes

Business Unit Performance

  • Fleet & Operations: 14 new aircraft entered service; Embraer E195-E2 cabin reconfiguration increased capacity and reduced CO? per passenger by 3%.

  • Pilots: Record recruitment and training levels.

  • Transavia: Higher revenues and capacity, but weaker profitability.

  • Cargo: Stable performance.

  • Engineering & Maintenance: Strong financial contribution.

2026 Outlook

CEO Marjan Rintel described 2026 as a “crucial year” requiring accelerated transformation. CFO Bas Brouns emphasised that costs are rising faster than revenues, increasing vulnerability and necessitating structural decisions to improve predictability and fund future investment.

Bottom line: KLM has stabilised earnings, but thin margins and structural cost pressures mean deeper reforms are needed to restore sustainable profitability.
