KLM has begun offering free onboard Wi-Fi on its European routes, becoming one of the first airlines in Europe to provide complimentary internet access throughout the flight. The service launches on 22 January and allows passengers to browse the web, send emails, stream music and video, and use online apps during their journey.
The rollout will take place in phases. As of launch, around half of KLM’s European fleet will be equipped with free Wi-Fi, with coverage expanding in the coming years to all A321neo and Embraer 195-E2 aircraft, as well as part of the Boeing 737-800 fleet. Passengers can access the service by logging in or registering as Flying Blue members.
With no in-seat entertainment screens on its European aircraft, KLM sees free internet as a key upgrade to passenger comfort. According to Stephanie Putzeist, Vice President Customer Experience, the move responds directly to strong customer demand and aims to make short-haul travel more personal and flexible.
The initiative complements KLM’s ongoing fleet renewal. Since August, the airline has added 12 A321neo aircraft dedicated to European services, featuring modern cabins and enhanced comfort, reinforcing KLM’s focus on improving the short-haul travel experience.
