KLM ground staff at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport will stage an eight-hour strike next Wednesday (14:00-22:00) after union negotiations with the airline collapsed. The CNV and FNV unions rejected KLM’s proposed pay deal and are demanding a 7% wage increase, criticising a proposed two-year pay freeze despite executive bonuses and pilot incentives.
The strike coincides with the start of the school holidays in the Southern Netherlands. Although KLM is considering legal action to block the strike, unions argue it can proceed safely based on passenger flow data and a safety protocol.
A similar strike was halted last weekend by a court due to heavy holiday and NATO summit-related traffic.
KLM reported a €271 million drop in profits last year, citing financial pressures, but unions say it’s unfair that ground staff are asked to sacrifice while management and pilots are compensated.
