KLM Boeing 777 declares emergency and returns to Amsterdam Schiphol after mid-Atlantic turnback

Share

KLM flight KL791, operated by a Boeing 777-300ER (registration PH-BVS), returned to Amsterdam Schiphol shortly after departure to São Paulo following an in-flight emergency declaration.

The aircraft departed from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol around 13:30 local time and initially climbed to 29,000 feet before continuing to 31,000 feet near the Channel Island of Guernsey. Shortly afterwards, the crew initiated a turnback toward Amsterdam.

During the return, the crew squawked 7700, the international transponder code indicating a general onboard emergency. The aircraft remained under emergency status for the duration of the flight back, which lasted roughly one hour. It landed safely at Schiphol just over two hours after departure and taxied to the gate without assistance.

The precise cause of the incident has not yet been confirmed. Initial unverified reports circulating on aviation monitoring channels suggested a possible oil-related issue, but no official statement has confirmed this.
