KLM, NLR (Dutch Aerospace Centre) and GKN Fokker celebrate their one-hundredth anniversary in 2019.

In honour of their respective anniversaries, they organise the event ‘100 years of aviation in the Netherlands‘ at the Eye Film Museum in Amsterdam on 14 March 2019. During the event, attention will be paid to the development of international civil aviation and the challenges for aviation in the Netherlands will be discussed in order to be able to fly smart, in a sustainable and economically sound way. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, GKN Fokker and NLR are pleased to announce that His Majesty the King will be present at the event.

Student challenge, new coin and special stamp

A student challenge has been proposed especially for the jubilee year, in which students will present their innovative, technical and social answers to sustainability issues. The King will speak with the participants of this challenge during his visit. Minister of Infrastructure and Public Works Cora van Nieuwenhuizen will be awarding a prize for the winning idea.

In honour of the hundred years of Dutch aviation, the Koninklijke Nederlandse Munt (Royal Dutch Mint) made a jubilee coin, which is regarded as an official payment method. The King symbolically will receive the first issued coin during the event, in the presence of State Secretary of Finance Menno Snel.

A new stamp will also be unveiled on the theme of 100 years of aviation in the Netherlands. This will be inaugurated by Minister Cora van Nieuwenhuizen.

Eye Film Museum

The celebration of the anniversaries starts at the Eye Film Museum because of the historical relationship of Dutch aviation with Amsterdam Noord. In 1919 the First Air Traffic Exhibition Amsterdam (ELTA) was organised there. Shortly thereafter, KLM was founded, for which Fokker, also founded in that year, manufactured the aircraft. In 1919, the forerunner of the NLR, the Rijksstudiedienst voor de Luchtvaart (RSL), was also established to increase the safety of military and civil aviation.
