Air Europa has taken a decisive step toward modernising its long-haul fleet, signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Airbus for up to 40 A350-900 aircraft. Announced at the Dubai Airshow, the deal positions the A350 as the backbone of the airline’s future widebody operations.

The agreement marks a significant turning point for the Spanish carrier, which aims to replace its existing long-haul fleet and further strengthen its network across Latin America—its most important long-haul market. The A350-900’s fuel efficiency, operating economics and passenger comfort were key factors in the selection.

“This order is a strategic milestone in Air Europa’s fleet development,” said Juan José Hidalgo, the airline’s president. “The A350-900 is a game-changer for key destinations in Latin America. It delivers the cabin experience, performance and economics needed to grow our network without compromise.”

Airbus welcomed Air Europa into what it called the “A350 family,” emphasising the aircraft’s leading position in the widebody sector. “This order is a strong endorsement of the A350 as the benchmark platform for efficiency and passenger comfort in the long-haul market,” said Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP Sales. “We are committed to supporting Air Europa’s ambitious growth strategy.”

The A350 Family, the most modern long-haul aircraft currently in service, offers a range of up to 9,700 nm (18,000 km) and incorporates lightweight materials, advanced aerodynamics and latest-generation Rolls-Royce engines. Airbus says the aircraft delivers a 25% reduction in fuel burn, operating costs and CO2 emissions compared to older twin-aisle models. Its Airspace cabin promises a quieter interior, improved air quality and modern in-flight amenities.

All Airbus aircraft are currently certified to fly with up to 50% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), with the company targeting 100% SAF capability by 2030.

By the end of October 2025, the A350 Family had accumulated over 1,400 orders from 64 customers, underscoring its position as the world’s leading new-generation widebody programme.
