A former Air Canada captain, Geoffrey Wall, has been arrested and charged following a major fraud investigation by Peel Regional Police, dubbed “Project Icarus.” Police allege he flew hundreds of commercial flights over nearly 17 years without holding the required Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL), a certification mandatory for airline captains in Canada.
Wall, 59, from Barrie, Ontario, allegedly used fraudulent licensing documents to deceive both Air Canada and Transport Canada while serving as captain from 2009 to 2025. During that time, he is said to have operated more than 900 domestic and international flights on widebody aircraft, transporting tens of thousands of passengers and earning nearly CAD 3 million.
Police say the investigation began after Transport Canada detected anomalies during a routine operational review at Toronto Pearson Airport. Wall is also accused of attempting to mislead investigators through a false police report.
He faces multiple charges, including fraud over $5,000, public mischief, and possession of forged documents. Authorities described the alleged conduct as a serious breach of safety-critical trust systems, even though Air Canada maintains that pilot competency checks and recurrent training ensured operational safety was not compromised.
Air Canada removed Wall from duty upon discovering the licensing issue and reported it to regulators. The airline says internal audits have found no other similar cases.
Wall had recently been employed part-time at Georgian College following his retirement from aviation. However, the college has declined to comment on his current status due to the ongoing criminal investigation.
Canadian Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said the case will prompt a review of regulatory safeguards, noting that the system ultimately detected the alleged misconduct.
