Air Calédonie has placed nearly half of its workforce on furlough after two weeks of flight suspensions caused by ongoing airfield blockades across New Caledonia.
Flights have been grounded since 2 March, as groups representing local residents and customary leaders block access to key airfields. The disruption follows a dispute over plans to relocate the airline’s operations from Magenta Airport in Nouméa to La Tontouta International Airport.
Talks between authorities and customary leaders on the Isle of Pines have so far failed to produce a breakthrough, with both sides maintaining their positions.
Facing a sharp drop in revenue, the airline confirmed it is furloughing around half of its 220 employees to preserve liquidity.
Management warned that cash reserves could be exhausted by early April, adding that insolvency proceedings may be necessary if the situation does not improve within the coming weeks.
The proposed transfer to La Tontouta—located about 40 km from Nouméa—is intended to deliver significant cost savings, estimated at 500 million CFP francs annually.
However, the plan has met resistance from island communities, who fear:
Longer travel times
Higher ticket prices
Reduced accessibility to essential air services
The crisis highlights the airline’s fragile position following the pandemic and the unrest of 2024, with unions warning that employees are being caught in a broader political dispute.
Air Calédonie says it is ready to gradually resume operations if blockades are lifted, but for now the situation remains at a standstill.
Bottom line: Prolonged airfield blockades have pushed Air Calédonie into a severe financial crisis, forcing furloughs and raising the prospect of insolvency unless a resolution is reached quickly.
