Air Canada has taken delivery of its first Airbus A321XLR, marking a significant step in the airline’s fleet modernisation and network expansion strategy.
The aircraft, handed over in Hamburg and leased from SMBC Aviation Capital, is the first of 30 A321XLRs set to join the fleet in the coming years. Designed for longer-range, fuel-efficient operations, the jet will allow Air Canada to launch new transatlantic routes from Montréal and Toronto, while also strengthening key North American services.
A major highlight is the introduction of lie-flat Business Class seats—branded as Signature Class—on a single-aisle aircraft for the first time in Air Canada’s history. The cabin features 14 premium seats alongside a redesigned onboard experience that includes larger entertainment screens, Bluetooth connectivity, onboard Wi-Fi for Aeroplan members, and updated interiors inspired by Canadian landscapes.
The A321XLR is expected to play a central role in the airline’s growth strategy, offering the flexibility to serve thinner long-haul routes and adapt to seasonal demand. According to Airbus, the aircraft combines extended range with lower fuel consumption and reduced CO? emissions compared to previous-generation jets.
This delivery is part of a broader fleet renewal programme that also includes future arrivals of Airbus A350-1000 and Boeing 787-10 Dreamliner, as well as ongoing deliveries of the Airbus A220 and leased Boeing 737 MAX.
Pending certification by Transport Canada, the A321XLR will be gradually introduced into Air Canada’s schedule, supporting its ambitions for continued international growth and an upgraded passenger experience.
