For the first time, students pursuing an aviation degree will have the opportunity to train academically for the highly demanding and prestigious role of air traffic controller. This new pathway will be available at VIVES University of Applied Sciences from the 2025–2026 academic year.
In close collaboration with skeyes, Belgium’s national air navigation service provider, VIVES is launching a brand-new Air Traffic Control specialisation within its existing Bachelor of Aviation programme. This landmark development for aviation education in Flanders will be officially sealed on 4 June 2025 during a signing ceremony at the VLOC in Ostend.
Starting in September 2025, students enrolled in the Aviation bachelor’s programme can choose the Air Traffic Control specialisation in their third year, provided they pass mandatory aptitude assessments. The curriculum offers a unique blend of academic knowledge and hands-on practical experience at the EPNB training centre at the skeyes site in Steenokkerzeel – the heart of Belgium’s air traffic management operations.
Nancy Vermeulen, Head of Aviation Training & Drone Applications at VIVES: “With this programme, we offer our students direct access to a challenging aviation career with promising future prospects.”
The increasing volume of air traffic underscores the urgent need for highly skilled air traffic controllers. This innovative academic route directly addresses that demand. VIVES students will benefit from excellent career opportunities, international mobility, and a future-oriented education that prepares them for an essential role in global aviation.
The curriculum includes both basic and rating air traffic control training, delivered through advanced simulations that mirror real-life conditions. Students will refine crucial competencies such as communication, decision-making, and air traffic coordination. Aptitude assessments, administered by skeyes, are integral to the programme.
Upon completion, students will graduate with both a Bachelor’s degree in Aviation and a Student Air Traffic Controller Licence. This licence allows them to transition directly into an accelerated vocational training programme at an Air Navigation Service Provider (such as skeyes), fast-tracking them toward full professional qualification.
Johan Decuyper, CEO of skeyes: “As an air traffic controller, you are an invisible but essential link in ensuring the safety of thousands of passengers daily. In our state-of-the-art training facilities, VIVES students will be fully immersed in the dynamic and fascinating world of aviation.”
