Are standing-up aircraft seats the future for economy class travel?

Share

On every big air show and aerospace-industry exhibition, aircraft seat manufacturer Aviointeriors is displaying a variety of first class, business class, economy class and crew rest seats. At the 2019 Paris Air Show, the manufacturer is displaying an innovative seat called the “economy ultra-narrow seat pitch“.

“The Skyrider 2.0 is an innovative seat, it allows an ultra-high density in the aircraft cabin,” the manufacturer says, “Skyrider 2.0 opens the travelling experience to a wider passenger market, creating also a useful space for the introduction mixed classes boarded on the same aircraft.”

“Its main feature is the original bottom that ensures an increased upright passenger position allowing installation of the seat at a reduced pitch, while maintaining an adequate comfort.

The design of this seat enables to increase the passenger number by 20% allowing increasing profits for airline companies. Furthermore, Skyrider 2.0 weighs 50% less than standard economy class seats and the reduced number of components enable minimum maintenance costs.

In conclusion, Skyrider 2.0 is the new frontier of low cost tickets and offering a possibility to fly to whom today cannot afford it.”

Aviointeriors added a little chart with some possible multi-class configurations. Next to business class, standard economy class and premium economy, they added basic economy class: Skyrider 2.0

It’s a pity that the attention is being drawn to the dense economy seats as the manufacturer has some fancy designs for first, business and (premium) economy class!

Working for 25 years in the aviation industry, I changed my career and became a firefighter/EMT in 2021. I like to spend my free time with my two sons, girlfriend, family and friends. I love to travel, wine and dine and support my favourite football squad KV Mechelen. Once an Ironman 70.3 finisher and dreaming of completing a full distance.
