Air France rejected a demand by staff for a 6% wage increase and instead offered unions to compensate workers for any reduction in spending power since 2011, hoping to avert a planned strike on 23 March 2018.

Thanks, this neatly confirms the 170 figure comes from AF management without any further support. Not that I defend the strikers, but I prefer firmer info.
La direction d'Air France a chiffré le coût de ce mouvement à 170 millions d'euros.

Exactly, Jan!
Same with the number of strikers, André, echoing management, pretends a minority of 36% of the pilots is on strike. With 7 crews/aircraft and 36% on strike, that would stil leave 5 crews per aircraft available, so why would they have to cancel 40% of the flights?
Objective journalism and moderating is indeed a problem on aviation24.be

This part of the website is a discussion forum, not a newspaper. Every opinion may be expressed. If you have better or more accurate figures, please make them available for the benefit of all readers.

About your figures of cancelled flights, Air France never said 40%, but 30% in total (40% applies only to long-haul flights, for which the availability of pilots is more problematic due to rest periods, nights abroad, etc.).

Furthermore, after 7 days of strikes, the available pilots are reaching their limits.

Thus I see no reason not to believe the figures of Management. But if you have other ones, PLEASE let us know!
