Slots and aircraft need pilots to,operate them!
There is a shortage of experienced pilots. Ryanair offers 10000€ welcome bonus to 737 captains, easyJet can't find captains for their Portugese bases (+10000gross/month), Norwegian are cancelling flights due to lack of pilots. AZ-pilots are known to be high caliber, they are an asset not a cost.
Yes, but you want those pilots at the conditions you set, not the ones they currently have at AZ. Moreover, if they have the slots, they can find a pilot from anywhere. Moreover, if the pilots blow up the airline, then the only option is an asset sale. Regardless of that the pilots become on the market and thus airlines like FR get what they want.

The Codacons consumer advocacy group said Ryanair's decision to cancel 2,000 flights over the next six weeks has put a poor light on its plans to bid for bankrupt Alitalia.

Codacons added that "in light of what happened, the air carrier does not seem the most adapted to take over Alitalia."

Ryanair notified the Alitalia bankruptcy commissioners that it will not be pursuing its interest in the Italian carrier or submitting any further offers for the airline.

Not really a surprise after their own problems: they should first cure themselves before looking at others!

WINTER SEASON 2017-2018
The new Rome-Delhi service will be operated every day starting from 29 October, marking the resumption of Alitalia direct flights to India after 9 years of absence. The Rome-Male service, starting from 31 October and operated three times per week, represents the first time Alitalia flies with non-stop thrice-weekly flights to one of the most popular tourist destinations among Italian tour operators during winter. Flights to India and the Maldives will be operated with Airbus 330 on a three-class configuration: Magnifica, premium economy and economy.
In winter, Alitalia will resume service to the Canary Islands with a non-stop bi-weekly Rome- Tenerife service and will continue to operate the Rome-Kiev and Athens-Tel Aviv flights, which were launched last summer. The Italian airline will offer more connections from Rome Fiumicino to Athens, Barcelona, Nice, Prague, Sofia and Zurich, and from Milan Linate to Amsterdam and Paris Charles De Gaulle. On the domestic network, during winter the airline will resume direct Torino-Reggio Calabria connections starting from 2 November and will increase frequencies from the Rome Fiumicino hub to Bologna, Catania, Florence, Milan Linate, Naples and Pisa, from Milan Linate to Bari and Naples and from Turin to Naples. As part of the 2017-2018 winter season, Alitalia will fly to 74 destinations, including 20 in Italy and 54 worldwide, for a total of over 3,300 weekly flights and 97 routes.

Lufthansa interested in 'new' Alitalia

Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr said Thursday that the German airline would be interesting in taking over Alitalia only if it were possible to make a fresh start with it. "It there were a chance of creating a new Alitalia, as Europe's number one (carrier) Lufthansa would certainly be interested in the talks," Spohr was quoted as saying by German media.

"Italy is an important market for us. (But) Alitalia, as it is today, is not an issue". Former Italian flag carrier Alitalia is currently in emergency administration and its commissioners are looking for a new buyer willing to acquire the whole airline. Lufthansa is buying parts of failed German carrier Air Berlin.

Alitalia commissioners reportedly have not received any bids for a purchase of the company that leaves the company intact.

Alitalia was granted an extended bridge loan of €300 million from the government, adding to the €600 million loan in May 2017. The government also extended the deadline for the repayment of the loan to 30 September 2018 and extended the deadline for prospective buyers to present offers to acquire the carrier to 30 April 2018.

This is a farce! Alitalia has been "on the way to recovery" since before page 1 of this thread (December 2012)!

Month after month, public italian money is being poured down the Alitalia drain :( , and deadlines for non-binding/binding, re non-binding/binding, re-re non-binding/binding bids are being extended  !

It is now again extended to April 30, 2018   .

Obviously, the italian government is unable to put an end to that saga  . What about the EU commission?

Alitalia today confirmed it received seven envelopes containing bids by the evening deadline, but provided no details. The Italian government wants to close the sale by the end of April 2018.

One of the bidders is easyJet, which submitted an EOI in certain assets of a restructured Alitalia, consistent with easyJet’s existing strategy for Italy.

And we all know already that Lufthansa also made a bid, probably centred on long-haul routes.

I'm happy they are given an extended lease of life just because I booked with them early in the year for year-end period and then there was a new saga of bankruptcy few weeks later. Ironically I had stayed away on several occasions due to the uncertainty surrounding the Alitalia case.

Another lesson from this is that Etihad is cutting their losses and haven't proved to be able the magicians that could turn around or make a success out of Air Berlin nor Alitalia.

Alitalia received an offer from investment fund Cerberus (US) to purchase the airline, with hopes of keeping the Italian government on board as shareholders.

Alitalia received a €250 million offer from Lufthansa for most of the aircraft and half of the staff.

https://www.aviation24.be/airlines/lufth ... structure/

Following that offer, the administrators of Alitalia published the following media release:

The Special Commissioners of Alitalia – Luigi Gubitosi, Enrico Laghi and Stefano Paleari – have met today with a delegation from Lufthansa. The meeting is part of a series of talks between the Commissioners and all the parties who have expressed interest in the acquisition of Alitalia business activities.

It should be noted that the rumours reported by the media over the past days on alleged details of the offer presented by Lufthansa are to be considered groundless.

The Special Commissioners will hold ongoing negotiations with all interested parties in order to find the best solution for the future of the Company.

That's not what they are saying! The offer of Lufthansa is real, but the leaked details of that offer are groundless.
