Ryanair will cancel between 40 and 50 flights a week during the next 6 weeks to improve punctuality.

Already this weekend in Charleroi, following 4 flights are cancelled:
Saturday: flights to Zaragosa, Fez and Trapani
Sunday: flight to Vilnius.

Passengers will be reimbursed or an alternative will be proposed. Which one, at such a short notice?

And what if you booked a hotel in Fez for a nice holiday and your flight has been cancelled ?

The reason for the cancellation is an internal/operational problem, hence: for the above 4 flights, and for all other cancellations that are done within 14 days before flight date, Ryanair has to pay the indemnity as per EU Rule 261/2004 (indemnity, to be paid on top of the full refund or free rebooking).

During the 13:00 news programme, RTL-TVI interviewed a businessman due to fly to Milan tomorrow evening. He was told today by SMS that his flight is cancelled. He was able to rebook a flight on Monday morning, a return flight for which he had to pay 800 €, instead of the 100 € he had paid. And his hotel night in Milan is also lost. He is furious at Ryanair, from whom he will only get 100 €.

But what are his options? He has to be in Milan Monday morning for his business.

Ryanair insists it also caters to business people. Not sure many will continue with Ryanair under such conditions...

Of course he's also entitled for a 250 Euro indemnity, as per EU Rule 261/2004: cancellation within 14 days before travel date.

Sure, but that will not pay for his additional costs! Ryanair will either reimburse or re-book onto one of its own future flights, subject to availability: that will leave many passengers stranded. They should go one step further and re-book those passengers on other airlines as well.

Here is what Ryanair says on its website:

If your flight is cancelled we offer you two options to choose from:

1. Apply for a refund

If you wish to cancel your reservation and claim a full refund of the unused flight(s) click on the link below and enter your booking details.

Click Here to Apply for Refund

Refunds will be processed within 7 working days back to the form of payment used for the original booking.

2. Change your Cancelled Flight (for free)

The easiest way to change your cancelled flight for free (subject to seat availability) is by retrieving your booking online:

If you require rerouting options, departing / arriving from another airport served by Ryanair or changing an unaffected return flight, please contact one of our advisors using our Free Online Chat or calling one of our customer service Contacts Numbers

We understand that flight cancellations may cause distress and we will accommodate your option of choice wherever possible, while complying with EU Regulation 261/2004.

Interesting reading. This is indeed poor planning for issues that Ryanair knew they would happen this year.

The remark concerning their financial status is special.
When MOL mentioned Norwegian and their status, was he talking about them or his own company?

Reading the report in the Irish times one would think that they have grown too fast.

Anyway, it will be a costly joke: 2000 cancelled flights, with a load factor of 95% of 189 seats, at 250 € compensation per passenger, you can calculate yourself, that means 89,775,000 euros! Ryanair said on its website that all cancellations will be treated with respect to EU261/2004.

On top of that, someone from Test-Aankoop / Test-Achats has said on Flemish tv VRT that Test-Aankoop/Test-Achats will also demand reimbursement of other travel arrangements like hotels and car rentals.
