The guy from Claim it, knowing that the press would be there, rushed to the hotel to make a statement on tv: his usual "passengers are entitled to an indemnity of 600 €...".

Not that fast, mr. Pais. On 15th June 2016, the Journal of the European Union has published C/2016/3502 = the Commission Notice "Interpretative Guidelines on Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council establishing common rules on compensation and assistance to passengers in the event of denied boarding and of cancellation or long delay of flights..."This Notice makes clear when a technical failure can be seen as extraordinary circumstance. And me thinks that the failure of a door seal is acceptable as extraordinary circumstance, specially on a rather new aircraft like TUI's 787:

5.1.: Principle ... ... Finally, in case of technical problems extraordinary circumstances must relate to an event which meets two cumulative conditions: first, it is not inherent in the normal exercise of the activity of the air carrier concerned; second, it is beyond the actual control of that carrier on account of its nature or origin...

5.2. goes into details about "Technical defects". And though it's no general rule, me thinks again that a door seal failure applies as extraordinary circumstance: ... ...For instance, a breakdown, such as that at issue which was caused by the premature malfunction of certain components of an aircraft may constitute an unexpected event...

I don't really see that how a technical-extraordinary-circumstance-excuse can be used. Opening and closing aircraft doors is a normal part of operating an airline, maybe something/someone hit that door seal that rendered it unserviceable?

I think that paragraph is mainly used for technical faults resulting from bird/lightning strike, etc

The whole EC261 regulation is pretty ridiculous, it doesn't matter if an aircraft is delayed 3 hours or 3 days, the compensation is exactly the same...

The reasoning behind it may not be the most logical onz, but it is already good that there is some form of compensation for the passengers

The deffective part is not a seal, but a bearing on the door pull in mechanism. This issue prevents the cargo door from closing and obviously leads to flight cancellation.

Passengers who have booked a package (hotel & stay) may expect a % pro rata compensation for the lost holiday-days, as stated by Belgian travel legislation. TUI usually confirms this within days after the event.

For passengers who have booked a ticket only, there is no such indemnity when the airline regards it as an unforeseen technical failure = extraordinary circumstance = no indemnity. I would advise them to contact the airline's commercial department.

Strange: G-OBYF, a Manchester based TUI (UK) 767-300ER, just landed in BRU Brussels, coming from MAN Manchester as 6B-9007 / BLX-9007.

Next flight, according to Flightradar, is BRU-HEL Brussels-Helsinki BLX-9008. And after that: HEL-MAN (BLX-9009).

FPG Amentum (Ireland) delivered two B737-800s, serials 33974 and 35647, to TUI Airlines Belgium. Serial 35647 transitioned from Norwegian and is managed by FPG Amentum on behalf of a JOL owner, while serial 33974 transitioned from Air Europa (Spain) and is owned by FPG Amentum’s investor customer Global Aircraft Fund I.
