EasyJet says it is in a strong position to win the bid for Alitalia, however, the latter’s administrators require the entire route network to be preserved. EasyJet partner Air France is reportedly an option for taking over the Italian carrier’s long-haul routes.

Don't hold your breath yet, this is Italy!

Alitalia rescue discussions likely to continue into March

A deal to rescue Alitalia is unlikely to be reached before Italian elections in early March, according to a senior government official. Economic development minister Carlo Calenda said in an interview with Italian newspaper La Stampa that potential investors are waiting to see the results of March 4 elections.

With the upcoming elections on Sunday and the political turmoil that is foreseen afterwards, I wonder how anyone can still believe that's going to be the final deadline. :)

This is becoming a joke: the Italian government extends the deadline for Alitalia bids until the fourth quarter of the year!

EasyJet hasn't lost faith. It confirms it submitted a revised EOI for a restructured Alitalia, together as part of a consortium. Any further updates will be provided in due course, if appropriate.

Lufthansa also submitted an EOI for a restructured Alitalia, as one of the three bids the Italian carrier confirmed it received. Air France KLM denies any interest to do a bid on Alitalia, as was suggested by Bloomberg.

Italy's government says it will postpone the deadlines for repayment of a bridge loan to bankrupt national carrier Alitalia while it evaluates offers from three airlines to buy it.

The economic development ministry said the government would issue a decree next week to postpone the terms to close the deal and repay the loan, likely until later this year. Italy is in the midst of negotiations to form a new government, and any new deal would be put on hold until it is formed.

Italian media say Lufthansa, easyJet and Wizz Air submitted offers by Tuesday's deadline.

In a statement, the development ministry said the offers showed a "real interest" in Alitalia and that one of the three bids "includes concrete steps forward in terms of routes and personnel."

Alitalia moved a step closer to being sold to Lufthansa on Monday after an Italian government minister called the German airline's bid the "most promising".

Alitalia has been the subject of three offers or expressions of interest, with Britain's budget airline EasyJet one of the other companies keen on Italy's struggling flagship airline.

"Alitalia is still fragile and needs a partner. There's a chance to work on these offers and arrive at a structural solution that doesn't cost taxpayers anything more," Economic Development Minister Carlo Calenda told the La Repubblica daily.

Not sure I favour a LH take over .. seeing what they are doing with SN I would be very cautious indeed regarding such a scenario ...
I still think the AF/KL bid makes more sense.
Surprised and disappointed TK showed no interest ...

But there was no bid by AF/KL if I understood well!

Don’t underestimate italian people’s emotional reaction ;-)
In that case, I think that LH could prefer something like italianwings, just as belgianwings !
