United Airlines converts an order for 35 A350-1000 aircraft to 45 A350-900s.

Airbus Salvages United's $14 Billion A350 Order With Smaller Jet
(Bloomberg) -- Airbus SE secured an order for 45 of its A350-900 jetliners from United Continental Holdings Inc., holding on to a critical win after a run of deferrals by U.S. airlines for the European planemaker’s marquee wide-body plane. The deal, valued at $14 billion before customary discounts, is a conversion of an earlier order for 35 of Airbus’s bigger -1000 variant. The carrier had indefinitely postponed delivery of its first four planes earlier this year as it reviewed its fleet plans. Deliveries of the new Airbus jetliners won’t begin until 2022, when United’s fleet of Boeing Co. 777-200ER aircraft reach 25 years of age.

The smaller A350 is “a better fit and size for the United network,” the carrier said in a regulatory filing Wednesday. The airline’s earlier deal for 35 of the A350-1000 planes had a list value of $12.6 billion at current prices. United is seeking to renew its fleet of aging 747 and 777 wide-body planes.
The expanded Airbus order comes after American Airlines Group Inc. andDelta Air Lines Inc. both put off deliveries of the jet. Retaining Chicago-based United as a wide-body customer is crucial for Toulouse, France-based Airbus as it seeks to expand twin-aisle sales in Boeing’s home market.

The deal would lift Airbus’s backlog for the 325-seat A350-900 to 673 aircraft, while narrowing the order book for the 366-seat -1000 to 177, based on the planemaker’s latest order and delivery tallies. That underscores the pressure on bigger wide-body jets as carriers around the world rein in capacity expansion to ease pressure on fares.
United is the second-largest customer of the largest A350 model behind Qatar Airways Ltd., which recently scrapped orders for four -900 jets due to supplier delays. Delta said in May it would defer 10 orders for the jet and instead take a stretched version of Airbus’s A320 single-aisle workhorse. Meanwhile, American has postponed deliveries of 22 jets.

“For the past year, United has done a complete review to ensure that we have the right long-term fleet strategy,” Andrew Levy, United’s chief financial officer, said in a statement. “It was clear that the A350 aligns with our replacement needs and our network.”

Qatar Airways will finally take delivery of four A350s from Airbus that it previously cancelled over aerospace supplier problems, with delivery “in the near future”.

Airbus plans to extend the range of the A350-900 and -1000, with an extended Sharklet. The range will increase ~100 to 140 nm, with fuel consumption falling ~1.4 to 1.6%, respectively.

Airbus A350-1000 successfully completed its Functional and Reliability testing, bringing the aircraft a step closer to Type Certification in November 2017. The first customer delivery to Qatar Airways will follow in the coming weeks.

And about Qatar Airways: Airbus says the agreement signed with Qatar Airways following the cancellation of four A350 delivery slots was for the delivery of four associated finished aircraft by 2017-end. The cancelled orders were not reinstated.

Airbus says talks with Qantas about a plane that can fly 20 hours non-stop from Sydney to London are centred around the A350-900ULR, rather than reviving the -800 variant.

The A350XWBULR ;)

Airbus declined to specify a delivery date for the first A350-1000 to launch operator Qatar Airways, which was delayed as a result of the carrier not being fully satisfied with the aircraft.

Lufthansa is considering a follow-up order for more A350s now that the airline has seen the initial results of flying the aircraft. The company has 25 A350-900s on firm order, seven of which were delivered by end January 2018.

The A350-800 is officially dead.

Airbus eliminated the A350-800 order backlog after final customer Asiana Airlines (South Korea) converted the order to eight A350-900s. It also opted to switch one of its 10 A350-1000s to a -900.

About AirAsia X not purchasing the 10 A350's they had in option, it should not come as a big surprise since they don't really need the aircraft capability .. however be sure Boeing is putting heavy pressure on price to sell them their latest technology in place of the 66 A339 they still have in option. My personal opinion is that they will stick with the Airbus deal however it might not as obvious as expected for the Airbus commercial team ...

Airbus sees demand for between 50 and 100 orders for the A350 ULR, capable of flying from Sydney to London nonstop. Airbus is assessing all options, including reducing seat capacity, adding more fuel cells and modifications to engines. Air New Zealand could also consider the ULR.
