Lufthansa Technik and CFM International (CFM), a 50/50 joint venture between GE and Safran Aircraft Engines, announced that the two companies have completed a CFM Branded Service Agreement (CBSA), making Lufthansa Technik part of the maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) network for LEAP-1A engines.

The MRO support agreement enables Lufthansa Technik to offer high-quality, cost-efficient MRO services for LEAP-1A engines to customers worldwide as an independent MRO provider. This engine powers the new Airbus A320neo Family. The –CBSA includes extended licenses, other commercial agreements and strong technical cooperation. The focus thereof will be on optimizing the operating costs of the LEAP-1A engine and developing new MRO services. Under the terms of the agreement, Lufthansa Technik will also provide a range of MRO services tailored specifically to customers’ requirements and to the needs corresponding to the life-cycle of the engine. This will range from engine overhaul and parts repair to on-wing support and engineering.

“It is a real pleasure to welcome a provider of the calibre of Lufthansa Technik to the LEAP MRO network,” said Gael Meheust, President and CEO of CFM International.  “We have a very long, very successful relationship with them through the CFM56 product line.  This Branded Service Agreement will take that relationship to a whole new level.”

We are very proud of what we have accomplished with the LEAP engine in terms of fuel efficiency, reliability, and daily utilization and our customers love flying this engine.  We believe that the level of support Lufthansa Technik will help to ensure that our customers continue to reap those benefits over the life of the product.”

We are proud to join the CFM MRO network and extend our existing, very successful partnership and collaboration beyond the CFM56 family. The LEAP engine represents the next generation of aircraft engines with state-of-the-art technology. We are pleased to provide state-of-the-art MRO services to our customers worldwide and committed to continue delivering sustainable value and cost savings for airlines and lessors and their LEAP engines,” says Bernhard Krueger-Sprengel, Vice President Engine Services at Lufthansa Technik.

Preparations for the introduction of the LEAP engine are already underway at Lufthansa Technik. The company has been licenced for LEAP (LEAP-1A and LEAP-1B) since 2017, now the cooperation with CBSA for LEAP-1A has been intensified and a corresponding agreement for LEAP-1B is in preparation. The first LEAP-1A engine shop visit is expected in Hamburg in early 2019.
