Austrian Airlines today cancelled 150 flights due to meetings of the works council of their cockpit and cabin crew members. The airline already faced a series of cancellations earlier this month (6 and 7 March).

Austrian Airlines CEO Kay Kratky commented on the (unexpected) internal assembly: “150 out of a total of 380 flights were cancelled from today’s flight schedule. The short-term expansion of the combat measures clearly indicates that the union’s and the works council’s target is a disruption. It is incomprehensible and absolutely unacceptable to us that higher salary demands are carried out on the backs of our customers while competition is intensifying as well. In total, today more than 12,000 passengers are affected by the cancellations. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.

Due to the internal assembly being held by the flight personnel today Thursday, March 22, 2018 starting at 08:30 a.m., there are adverse effects on our flight operations. We have streamlined our scheduled flights in advance as a precautionary measure. We have cancelled around 150 flights. These amongst others include flights between Vienna and Amsterdam, Basel, Bologna, Berlin, Belgrad, Brussels, Bucharest, Cairo, Copenhagen, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Geneva, Graz, Hamburg, Innsbruck, Kiev, Leipzig, Lyon, London, Milan, Minsk, Moskow, Munich, Paris, Prague, Sofia, Stuttgart, Teheran, Tel Aviv, Warsaw, Venice, Zagreb and Zurich. The aim of this measure was to enable us to rebook passengers in a timely manner. Moreover, we have adjusted flight times for individual flights in order to ensure that these flights can be operated. List of cancelled Austrian Airlines flights.

  1. Is this works council expected to cause further delays and cancellations? If so shouldn’t you be advising your clients to rebook on another airline?
