The airline is to benefit from cost reduction advantages on transactions with IATA members.

The Spanish carrier is the IATA member with the lowest unit cost.

Vueling, the busiest airline at its Barcelona base, has announced today its membership into the International Air Transport Association (IATA) during the 71st IATA Annual General Meeting in Miami, Florida.

The IATA membership consolidates Vueling as a high service low-cost carrier, increasing partnership opportunities and reducing internal costs. IATA represents some 260 airlines in over 115 countries and Vueling becomes the member of IATA with the lowest unit costs.

In order to apply for membership, air carriers must maintain an IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) registration, which Vueling achieved in 2012 after a rigorous audit program that certified the company´s operational security and quality.

“Joining IATA is an important achievement for Vueling and the consequence of our constant efforts to meet the highest industry standards. Furthermore, being part of IATA will broaden Vueling’ s possibilities of being even more cost effective, as well as an active player on relevant industry issues”, said Alex Cruz, Chairman & CEO of Vueling.

Vueling, which is part of International Airlines Group (IAG), began its expansion of routes and frequencies in 2009. The following year it began to operate connecting flights, making its home airport of Barcelona El Prat Europe’s best-connected airport. This expansion is also being achieved by means of intercontinental connections via agreements with carriers such as British Airways, Qatar Airways and American Airlines.

“We welcome Vueling to the global family of IATA airlines. We look forward to working with Vueling to advance the industry’s common commitments —across all business models— to ever safer, more secure, increasingly efficient and sustainable connectivity,” said Tony Tyler, IATA’s Director General and CEO.
